- A 34-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested in Ogun state for attempting to take his own life - The father of five claimed to have been pushed over the edge by frustration A 34-year-old Nigerian man identified as Abiodun Onipede has been arrested by the anti-vandal team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun state for trying to take his life. The father of five was caught while trying to mount a rope in the bush along Ayetoro road in Abeokuta. The man had reportedly tied the rope to a big tree and was about to put his neck in the noose when he was caught by a member of the team who wanted to ease himself. When Onipede was probed, it was discovered that he dropped out of Federal College of Education Osiele in 200 Level. The man claimed his inability to pay made him leave the school. Onipede was as at the time of his arrest a commercial tricycle driver.
Talking more about his frustration and the reason he wanted to end his life, the Keke Napep rider said he lost one of his children because he could not afford to pay the hospital bill set to his name. The Nigerian man in his thirties also said he was a former staff of the traffic compliance and agency in the state. He said his failure to pay the ‘Lapo’ loan he owed forced him to make the decision to end his life. "I am frustrated because am owing a lot of people ranging from house bill to electricity bill, and some other bills. I am ashamed of myself because am not a responsible man, I cannot cater for my family as a head. . The Lapo officials have used OPC to arrest my wife because of the money, if not for the help of my pastor. Am just frustrated because I have to pay N3,000 every Friday and I am presently jobless. And I still have like N24,000 to balance. . I cannot pay the hospital bill of my mother, I can’t take care of her, I was told she is now on the street begging to survive," he lamented. The amount borrowed was to start his tricycle business and his inability to pay it back led him to this.
Onipede regretted his action after being caught. Ogbonnaya Dyke, the NSCDC public relations officer, has reacted on the incident stating that it is a criminal offence for anyone to try taking his life. As a result of this, he said Onipede would be handed over to the police.
