Reports in Italy claim Chelsea were chasing the 17-year-old attacker, who operates in the number ten position, while Liverpool tried to sign him last summer.
His current contract is due to expire at the end of the next season which has put a number of clubs on alert.
However, La Gazzetto dello Sport claimed this week that Gaetano is to sign a new three-year contract with Napoli.
Gaetano scored a superb goal direct from a corner in Napoli’s Uefa Youth League win over Feyenoord in midweek and will showcase his talent in two upcoming matches with Manchester City’s Under-19 side.
Gianluca Gaetano is the second Napoli player who was targeted by the Blues. Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was monitoring the contract situation of Algerian left-back Faouzi Ghoulam. His contract expires in the summer of 2018 and has yet to put pen to paper on an extension. The 26-year-old and his agent Jorge Mendes want to include a release clause in the player’s new deal. That’s why negotiations have been put on hold.
